Coronavirus & Weddings

Coronavirus & Weddings

A message to my couples and fellow wedding suppliers

Monday, March 23rd, 2020 saw my other half (Martin) turn 30 and it was a 30th birthday like no other – the UK government declared national lockdown due to the Coronavirus/ Covid19. It is now June and despite everything being semi-relaxed, things are most certainly not back to normal. I have been wanting to write a blog post regarding this pandemic for a very long time, but like many wedding suppliers in the industry, I have been prioritising wedding postponements and organising pre-wedding shoots and family shoots.

This blog post is designed to inform you of my personal experience with the Coronavirus and how it has directly impacted my little business and my couples’ wedding plans.

To Brides, Grooms and Couples Postponing Weddings

I cannot fathom how stressful this time is/ has been for you. I know that many of you have been planning your dream wedding for months (even years.) Coronavirus has meant that you have had to face unwelcome changes such as postponing to an off-peak date, the possibility of not being able to have all of your guests attend, finding new wedding suppliers (as some of your original vendors cannot make your new date) – the list goes on. My calendar has been completely wiped of weddings from now through to September (however, I do have a couple of very, very small weddings that might still be able to go ahead.) 2020 was due to be my busiest year with over 40 incredible weddings booked in. I am astounded that I have been able to book nearly all of my brides and grooms in for either the tail end of this year or sometime during next year. Every single one of my couples has been so understanding and has worked tirelessly with me to find a new date that works for themselves and their other wedding vendors. I will be completely honest and admit that I have sadly been unable to accommodate all of my 2020 wedding bookings however I have been able to ensure that I can provide said couples with a list of talented photographers who are free to shoot their new date.

I am hoping that those of you who have postponed (some even more than once) have been able to take a small amount of solace in that when your new date finally comes around, you will be able to have your wedding day without the stress and worry of the Coronavirus. Like everyone in the wedding industry, I am hoping that weddings will resume soon however none of us knows if this will happen for certain and what restrictions may be in place. Despite the upheaval of having to change the date of your wedding, I would stress that you do what’s right for you. Just please understand that many of us are extremely busy for next year so if you have got new dates in mind please, please, please check them with your wedding suppliers first. I am extremely lucky in that I have been able to offer back up dates for my couples ensuring that if their 2020 wedding is unable to go ahead they can postpone to next year.

I am aware that many of you are very anxious about your upcoming weddings (especially if you are looking to get married this year) and uncertain of what to do for the best. If you have any questions or worries, please do not hesitate to contact me. Even if you are reading this and are not one of my couples. I would be more than willing to give you some reassurance and guidance (although I do not have all of the answers.) Please do reach out if you need someone to talk to.

Norfolk_wedding_photographer_23

To fellow Wedding Photographers & Suppliers

Like many wedding suppliers, my business is my livelihood. The stress and panic that has been caused by the Coronavirus has been excruciating however, having a small group of wedding vendors to talk to has been a godsend. If you are worrying about everything that is going on but you don’t feel like you can reach out to anyone about it, please do try talking to another photographer, videographer, florist etc. It will help put your mind at ease and might even give you some ideas on how to cope both financially and mentally. I have been ensuring that my presence on social media is very much there (even though I really don’t feel like posting at times.) It has been so hard to gain motivation and enthusiasm especially when everything has been put on hold and I haven’t been able to capture new content but the messages of support I have been receiving have been worth it. Many of us (wedding photographers) have been proactive with advertising other areas of photography such as commercial, family and couple shoots. I am lucky in the sense that one of my Wedding Photography packages includes a pre-wedding shoot so I have been hard at work trying to fit in all of my 2021 bride and groom’s shoots in for this year. Having something booked in the diary to look forward to almost feels like a glimmer of hope, even though the Summer has been written off for weddings.

Financially, the self-employed grant has been a great help and booking in 2022 weddings has meant that deposits have been slowly coming in keeping my account topped up. I am definitely not a financial advisor but I have approached many of my couples who have postponed to see if they would be happy to pay their remaining balance a month before their original 2020 wedding date. With everything going on, I realise that this is a delicate subject and it has therefore not been possible for some of my couples however, many of my couples have the money saved and have been willing to keep to their original payment terms. This means that my earning are going to be able to be split between this year and next ensuring that I have an income this year (despite hardly any weddings.)

Lastly, the one trick that works best for me is actually one that goes against most of the blogs I have been reading… remove yourself from large social media groups and forums. I like to keep myself to myself and despite the good that Facebook groups can bring, there is also a tonne of bad points. I have a very small group of wedding vendor/ photographer friends whom I am in contact with occasionally, chatting about the odd news updates, and general support/advice. Facebook groups can be great for checking in with what everyone else is doing however, from my own experience the conversation often goes off tangent and forms into a heated debate rather than a constructive chat! It’s also great to have advice however thinking and talking about the Coronavirus can be tiring so switching off from it has meant that I have been able to selfishly forget about the circumstances for a little while. Please be aware that everyone is different. These are deeply unsettling, uncertain and worrying times and we are all trying to get our head around it all in our own way. Fingers crossed that our industry will recover and that we can get back to doing what we love very soon.

norfolk_wedding_megan_duffield_photographer_75

None of us know what’s going to happen or the full extent of the impact this pandemic will have on our lives, businesses and wedding plans. I have days when I feel optimistic and driven and I have some days when I feel very much the opposite. I absolutely love what I do and before this all started I was looking at a very full, daunting yet exciting diary. I would love to continue writing blog posts, especially covering subjects that are surrounded by the Coronavirus. If this blog post has helped you in any way and (despite the serious/ stressful content) you enjoyed reading it I would love to hear from you.

Thank you, Megan xx

Sussex Barn Wedding, Steven & Amie – Norfolk Wedding Photographer!

Norfolk Wedding Photographer

A Sussex Barn Wedding

Steven & Amie

Sussex Barn Wedding, North Norfolk. This wedding has been one that has been starred in my diary for what seems like forever. After photographing both Amie and Steven in their home city of Shoreditch, London, I completely fell in love with them as a couple! I could not have asked for more creative, kind and like-minded clients than these two! Both extremely driven and passionately in love, these guys are making it happen for themselves in the most down to earth way possible, which instantly made me so intrigued in their lives and personalities! I knew from the off that both Amie and Steven were going to have a spectacular wedding and didn't they just! You can find Steven and Amie's pre-wedding shoot here! Or, if you're here to scroll through their big day, stay put!

One thing I love more than anything at a wedding (apart from lovely people) are flowers. The more flowers the better! And when Amie admitted that she had approached the infamous Swaffham and Fakenham Florist with a multiple page slideshow, I instantly knew that this wedding was going to be brimming with greenery and floral colour! Teamed with the one and only Penny at The Little Lending Co. Steven and Amie's Spring wedding day boasted a rustic, tropical theme of pastel blues and bright pinks along with a bohemian vibe achieved through Persian rugs, wicker chairs, brass candlesticks and contrasting modern perspex pew ends (that displayed two beautiful floral arrangements and a chalk painted 'A' and 'S' on each one! - Penny you are a genius!) When I first spoke with Steven and Amie I was a little apprehensive as yes, the Sussex Barn is all set up for beautiful weddings, but The White House was far from finished with its major renovation taking place just half a year before the wedding. I met with Steven and Amie six weeks before their big day to have a scout round this idyllic hideaway wedding venue in the quaint north Norfolk Town of Burnham Market and I was absolutely struck with how incredible the house looked. This stunning multiple bedroom 'house' is light, airy, super modern and boasts the most beautiful exterior with the original features still very much apparent. (F.Y.I. The White House can be booked for holidays and weekend get-aways! I'm certainly thinking about hiring it out after this manic 2018 wedding season!)

I am so lucky that I have the fantastic Eloise from 'Rose & Spear Photography' to call upon when I have big, super creative weddings like this one! Eloise spent the morning documenting Steven and his Groomsmen getting ready in the morning and enjoying a quick pint to cure the nerves. Due to it being such a fantastic, creative wedding, Eloise decided to stay for the whole day and photographed some incredible shots capturing a different angle of this beautiful couple and their friends/ families - thank you lovely lady! Both Steven and Amie were so thrilled! I could go on and on about this stunning wedding day as I honestly felt like these guys were more friends than clients. Amazing day, amazing venue, amazing people, amazing flowers, amazing styling and AMAZING dresses! Scroll down to see Amie's super elegant Stephanie Allin gown and the bridesmaids Needle And Thread multi-coloured beaded designer dresses that I wanted to take home for myself!! This is a beefy blog post with over 200 images, so grab a coffee as it is a long one! Meg x

At Home Couple Shoot, Norwich Norfolk. This pre-wedding couple shoot has had me bouncing around like a yo-yo the past few days as it was so ‘lit!’ Both Simon and Bryony had asked me if they could have their engagement shoot at their home, little did I know that they have spent 3 whole years renovating a very old and very dated pub into an incredible personalised and rustic styled haven with each room providing me with at least 3 stunning backdrops. If you have read my previous blog post, you will know how much I love it when couples put their stamp, character and style into their shoots whether it is through clothing, music, accessories, pets or colours. I don’t think this shoot could be any more personal to Bryony and Simon – scroll down and you will see why I cannot smiling from ear to ear! Also, I will give 10 points to those who can guess the colour theme to this beautiful couple’s Oxnead Hall, Norfolk Wedding! Hint – look at the walls! Not only was Cross Keys House so photogjenic, so were the couple! I adored how besotted these two are with each other! Their wedding day in August is ging to be a breeze to photograph especially with my very good friend, Melissa Abel doing the make up!!

If you would like to read more information about my chilled out, super fun couple/ pre-wedding shoots take a look at my previous blog post here! Alternatively, if you are planning your wedding and are seeking a creative film style photographer who loves the relaxed and unobtrusive styled shots pop me a message via my contact page! I would love to hear from you!

My ‘Top Tips’ For Couple Photos!

Top Tips

for Couple Photos

Personally, I am not the best in front of the camera which is why I spend my time behind it! Until only recently I used to dread the thought of having to photograph pre-wedding couple shoots simply because I would see the same dread in 80% of my bride and groom to be’s faces at the prospect of having to have their photo taken together whilst looking romantic and totally in love… in a ‘natural’ manner. The reality of the matter is that many couples often go for walks yards apart and spend the walk making no human contact what-so-ever! The idea of couple photos seemed very unnatural to me, however, I absolutely loved seeing beautiful shots by other wedding photographers and biting the bullet I soon realised how beneficial and how much fun they really are. The entire concept of capturing natural photos is incredibly ironic when being photographed is definitely not an every-day thing! I now include a pre-wedding couple shoot in my overall wedding package. I have listed the 5 reasons as to why below.

pre-wedding_shoot_photographer_1

Everyone is the same.

Whether you absolutely love having your photo taken or absolutely hate it, having your photo taken in a natural manner is completely alien and is extremely unnerving for the first 20 minutes. Many confident couples want to conform to smiling at the camera and shy couples often feel lost and put on the spot. I do not pose you, however, I have to direct you in order to create the shot, you will then do the rest by laughing at the unusual concept of being incredibly close to one another in a public space. It’s these in-between moments that I will capture. We will go to your favourite beach, woodland, park etc. and walk, talk and shoot resulting in different backdrops and therefore a variety of photos.

The process of feeling very much on the spot for the first 20 minutes is exactly the same for EVERY couple I have ever photographed. I personally know how awkward it can feel as ironically, I hate having my photo taken! I will aim to capture shots of you and your fiancé together in a romatic yet relaxed way – laughing and genuinely enjoying each other’s company! Getting used to the camera is the main reason I include pre-wedding couple photos in my wedding package!

You get to know me before your wedding day!

Many of my couples book me for their wedding months or even years in advance and even though I offer unlimited coffee meetings, it is a long time to go without seeing one another before your big day. A pre-wedding couple shoot is a perfect opportunity for you and your finacé to experience how I work and (hopefully) gain confidence from that before your wedding day! Getting to photograph you both before your day will allow me to take note of how you interact with each other, your individual personalities and even your quirks. These details will help me capture the moments on the wedding day that is unique to just the two of you. I love to have an informal relationship with my clients as I strongly believe that I achieve so much more from being your friend than a serious professional photographer. If you feel at ease with me and are able to chat then you are half way there to achieving natural and beautiful pre-wedding shots!

You will have some lovely photos of you both to display in your home or to use for your wedding stationery/ wedding website.

Obviously, your wedding is all about you and your finacé however you will find that your photos will incorporate all of your friends and family whether they are in the shot or the background. After your wedding breakfast/ during dusk I will take you both away from the hustle and bustle of your wedding venue and we will take some shots of you both in ‘golden hour’ light. Due to evening wedding guests usually arriving just after you have eaten your dessert it is important that the couple photos do not over-run. A pre-wedding shoot will ensure that you have ample shots of you both that you will love and can display in your home plus when it comes to the couple photos on your wedding day you will be confident, relaxed and completely unphased by the whole process! My main priority when photographing weddings is that I allow you to enjoy your day naturally which means ensuring that I do not spend hours on family photos and directed photos. A pre-wedding shoot will help the day run smoothly and allow you to bag ‘that shot’ first time around!

Capturing photos of you both in the place(s) that mean the most to you.

Being a lover of the outdoors and the Norfolk countryside, I honestly love nothing more than going for a stroll in the woods, across the beach or park. I will always use the location that I shoot in to create a shot, the pressure is not all on you and your finacé. Living in Norfolk/ Suffolk I am so lucky to have so many incredible landscapes on my doorstep. Alternatively, if you have a desired pre-wedding shoot location we can organise a shoot there! As well as outdoor pre-wedding shoots, many couples love for their photos to be taken at their home. Your first home together is a landmark occasion in itself so to have photos of you both together enjoying the space is the perfect way to document the place where it all started! At home pre-wedding couple shoots have a warm and authentic feel and emphasize the ‘natural’ aesthetic as your home is typically a location where you would snuggle up on the sofa or give your fiancé a bear hug in the mornings! Cosy up with a cup of tea, your soul mate and fur baby (cat/ dog/ rabbit) and get some portraits of you all together!

You can be as subtle or creative as you want to be.

Many of my couples go into their pre-wedding couple shoot with very little idea of what they are going to gain and how the shoot is going to pan out, however, I have had a few couples who have truly loved putting their stamp on the shoot by incorporating certain locations, pieces of clothing, pets and hints that reflect you both as a couple. For example, in November 2017 I photographed a fab long-distance couple who wanted to incorporate their countries in their pre-wedding couple shoot. With the groom to be being British and the bride to be being American, it made sense that the Union Jack and the Stars and Stripes had to be involved! I do tend to steer away from gimmicks however sometimes, I can just about make them work in a non-cheesy, natural-esque way.

I hope this blog post has been useful and reassuring if you are apprehensive about pre-wedding/ engagement/ couple photos! I completely understand how you feel and how it is so easy to perceive pre-wedding couple shoots as cringeworthy however, I have gone from being so scared to shooting them to absolutely loving them as it has enabled me to get to know my clients sooo much better, push myself out of my comfort zone and also take some really lovely photos that you will (hopefully) love! A Winter Wedding | Norfolk Wedding Photographer

WINTER WEDDING, NORFOLK

MR & MRS TOTTEN

This beautiful winter wedding featured one of Norwich’s iconic landmarks aka Norwich Castle, a true vintage style and one of my favourite places to eat cream tea. the Norwich Assembly House and of course the loveliest couple!

This super lovely and super chilled winter wedding was actually my first ever winter wedding! Taking place on the 23rd of December, both Joe and Holly were keen to incorporate Christmas into their wedding but in a non-cheesy manner. With this in mind, I felt that it was important to use twinkly lights in the foreground and background of some of the shots to create a seasonal feel in a non-obvious way. Holly looked so stylish and I absolutely loved her, her sister and her Mum’s 20’s styled sequin dresses and matching coloured faux fur coats (which were perfect for keeping the ladies warm!!) Joe could not have looked more dapper. Being in the RAF, of course, he had to wear his super smart uniform! This wedding day was filled with incredibly relaxed and lovely people which made my job very easy when it came to documenting the day as it unfolded!

This wedding filled me with confidence and love for winter weddings. Like most photographers, I was a little dubious about winter weddings as they are completely different in terms of weather, temperature and light to Summer weddings! I was very keen to maintain my light and candid photography style which I do feel like I have managed to achieve! If you are planning your winter wedding (or Spring, Summer or Autumn wedding) please visit my main wedding page or pop me a message via my contact page!
