My ‘Top Tips’ For Couple Photos!

Top Tips

for Couple Photos

Personally, I am not the best in front of the camera which is why I spend my time behind it! Until only recently I used to dread the thought of having to photograph pre-wedding couple shoots simply because I would see the same dread in 80% of my bride and groom to be’s faces at the prospect of having to have their photo taken together whilst looking romantic and totally in love… in a ‘natural’ manner. The reality of the matter is that many couples often go for walks yards apart and spend the walk making no human contact what-so-ever! The idea of couple photos seemed very unnatural to me, however, I absolutely loved seeing beautiful shots by other wedding photographers and biting the bullet I soon realised how beneficial and how much fun they really are. The entire concept of capturing natural photos is incredibly ironic when being photographed is definitely not an every-day thing! I now include a pre-wedding couple shoot in my overall wedding package. I have listed the 5 reasons as to why below.

Everyone is the same.

Whether you absolutely love having your photo taken or absolutely hate it, having your photo taken in a natural manner is completely alien and is extremely unnerving for the first 20 minutes. Many confident couples want to conform to smiling at the camera and shy couples often feel lost and put on the spot. I do not pose you, however, I have to direct you in order to create the shot, you will then do the rest by laughing at the unusual concept of being incredibly close to one another in a public space. It’s these in-between moments that I will capture. We will go to your favourite beach, woodland, park etc. and walk, talk and shoot resulting in different backdrops and therefore a variety of photos.

The process of feeling very much on the spot for the first 20 minutes is exactly the same for EVERY couple I have ever photographed. I personally know how awkward it can feel as ironically, I hate having my photo taken! I will aim to capture shots of you and your fiancé together in a romatic yet relaxed way – laughing and genuinely enjoying each other’s company! Getting used to the camera is the main reason I include pre-wedding couple photos in my wedding package!

You get to know me before your wedding day!

Many of my couples book me for their wedding months or even years in advance and even though I offer unlimited coffee meetings, it is a long time to go without seeing one another before your big day. A pre-wedding couple shoot is a perfect opportunity for you and your finacé to experience how I work and (hopefully) gain confidence from that before your wedding day! Getting to photograph you both before your day will allow me to take note of how you interact with each other, your individual personalities and even your quirks. These details will help me capture the moments on the wedding day that is unique to just the two of you. I love to have an informal relationship with my clients as I strongly believe that I achieve so much more from being your friend than a serious professional photographer. If you feel at ease with me and are able to chat then you are half way there to achieving natural and beautiful pre-wedding shots!

You will have some lovely photos of you both to display in your home or to use for your wedding stationery/ wedding website.

Obviously, your wedding is all about you and your finacé however you will find that your photos will incorporate all of your friends and family whether they are in the shot or the background. After your wedding breakfast/ during dusk I will take you both away from the hustle and bustle of your wedding venue and we will take some shots of you both in ‘golden hour’ light. Due to evening wedding guests usually arriving just after you have eaten your dessert it is important that the couple photos do not over-run. A pre-wedding shoot will ensure that you have ample shots of you both that you will love and can display in your home plus when it comes to the couple photos on your wedding day you will be confident, relaxed and completely unphased by the whole process! My main priority when photographing weddings is that I allow you to enjoy your day naturally which means ensuring that I do not spend hours on family photos and directed photos. A pre-wedding shoot will help the day run smoothly and allow you to bag ‘that shot’ first time around!

Capturing photos of you both in the place(s) that mean the most to you.

Being a lover of the outdoors and the Norfolk countryside, I honestly love nothing more than going for a stroll in the woods, across the beach or park. I will always use the location that I shoot in to create a shot, the pressure is not all on you and your finacé. Living in Norfolk/ Suffolk I am so lucky to have so many incredible landscapes on my doorstep. Alternatively, if you have a desired pre-wedding shoot location we can organise a shoot there! As well as outdoor pre-wedding shoots, many couples love for their photos to be taken at their home. Your first home together is a landmark occasion in itself so to have photos of you both together enjoying the space is the perfect way to document the place where it all started! At home pre-wedding couple shoots have a warm and authentic feel and emphasize the ‘natural’ aesthetic as your home is typically a location where you would snuggle up on the sofa or give your fiancé a bear hug in the mornings! Cosy up with a cup of tea, your soul mate and fur baby (cat/ dog/ rabbit) and get some portraits of you all together!

You can be as subtle or creative as you want to be.

Many of my couples go into their pre-wedding couple shoot with very little idea of what they are going to gain and how the shoot is going to pan out, however, I have had a few couples who have truly loved putting their stamp on the shoot by incorporating certain locations, pieces of clothing, pets and hints that reflect you both as a couple. For example, in November 2017 I photographed a fab long-distance couple who wanted to incorporate their countries in their pre-wedding couple shoot. With the groom to be being British and the bride to be being American, it made sense that the Union Jack and the Stars and Stripes had to be involved! I do tend to steer away from gimmicks however sometimes, I can just about make them work in a non-cheesy, natural-esque way.

I hope this blog post has been useful and reassuring if you are apprehensive about pre-wedding/ engagement/ couple photos! I completely understand how you feel and how it is so easy to perceive pre-wedding couple shoots as cringeworthy however, I have gone from being so scared to shooting them to absolutely loving them as it has enabled me to get to know my clients sooo much better, push myself out of my comfort zone and also take some really lovely photos that you will (hopefully) love! A Winter Wedding | Norfolk Wedding Photographer

WINTER WEDDING, NORFOLK

MR & MRS TOTTEN

This beautiful winter wedding featured one of Norwich’s iconic landmarks aka Norwich Castle, a true vintage style and one of my favourite places to eat cream tea. the Norwich Assembly House and of course the loveliest couple!

This super lovely and super chilled winter wedding was actually my first ever winter wedding! Taking place on the 23rd of December, both Joe and Holly were keen to incorporate Christmas into their wedding but in a non-cheesy manner. With this in mind, I felt that it was important to use twinkly lights in the foreground and background of some of the shots to create a seasonal feel in a non-obvious way. Holly looked so stylish and I absolutely loved her, her sister and her Mum’s 20’s styled sequin dresses and matching coloured faux fur coats (which were perfect for keeping the ladies warm!!) Joe could not have looked more dapper. Being in the RAF, of course, he had to wear his super smart uniform! This wedding day was filled with incredibly relaxed and lovely people which made my job very easy when it came to documenting the day as it unfolded!

This wedding filled me with confidence and love for winter weddings. Like most photographers, I was a little dubious about winter weddings as they are completely different in terms of weather, temperature and light to Summer weddings! I was very keen to maintain my light and candid photography style which I do feel like I have managed to achieve! If you are planning your winter wedding (or Spring, Summer or Autumn wedding) please visit my main wedding page or pop me a message via my contact page!

A Couple Shoot in the Big Smoke!

A (PRE-WEDDING) COUPLE SHOOT IN THE BIG SMOKE

STEVEN & AMIE

Those who know me and my style will know that I am completely in love with Norfolk and the many woodlands, beaches, parks and gardens that the beautiful county has to offer! When myself and Amie began talking about her and Steven’s Norfolk wedding she explained that they both live in Shoreditch and that they would love to have a pre-wedding/ couple shoot in the big smoke so that they can have a variety of contrasting images of them both. Initially, I was feeling EXTREMELY out of my comfort zone and when I boarded the train I was slightly on the apprehensive side as I had no idea what to expect!

I stepped out of the station to a rainy street and was greeted by a huge hug by Steven who had walked from their flat to meet me to help me navigate to the café. I could tell by our email conversations how lovely Amie was and she too dished out the biggest hug – I felt as though I had known these two for years! Needless to say that the nerves soon faded and after a much-needed cup of tea and breakfast we then headed out to scout out some locations for photos! I could not believe how many cool, funky and all-in-all photogenic backdrops we came across! We began the shoot by using graffitied walls for a pop of colour, graphic shapes and striking patterns with the first design matching the blue of Amie’s turtleneck jumper (I was winning at life!) Not only did we manage to find graffitied walls, Steven and Amie showed me around their hometown and we shot on a rooftop, bar, by a beautiful mosaic wall, traditional London terrace houses for a classic Love Actually look and then we found a very unusual but insane backdrop that consisted of multiple coloured ribbons that had been entwined together for a random triangualr pattern! Scroll down to see some of my favourites from this super fun pre-wedding couple shoot!

I would love to know what you think about my slight change in style for this shoot! I had to go with the flow as there were definitely no fields, mud nor trees! I am super pleased with the result and actually loved the challenge of trying to stay true to my usual shooting technique with very unusual surroundings. Steven and Amie are so in love which did help massively as they are and were utterly besotted with one another which made my job so, so easy! Such a perfect couple and their plans for their wedding day next year make me want to jump up and down with excitement! I travelled up to London with a look of anguish on my face and travelled home beaming! If you and your partner or fiance are looking for a wedding photographer or simply to have some natural couple shots taken pop me a message and we can arrange a super fun shoot like the one featured on this page!

A Batemans Barn Wedding – Norfolk Wedding Photographer

A BATEMANS BARN WEDDING

M A T T   &   C H R I S T I N E

Christine and Matt’s wedding was my very first Batemans Barn wedding, and I was so excited to be shooting at such a characteristic venue! It’s not very often Wedding venues are 10 minutes from my house and is also a working farm!

If I said that this bright, bold and vibrant Norfolk Wedding featured a Braai, Boab Tree and Marimba Band what Country springs to your mind? This gorgeous Summer’s June wedding took place at the idyllic Batemans Barn in Harleston – an impressive restored medieval barn, farm and farm house only half an hour from Norwich. So… if you haven’t guessed already, Christine is South African which meant lots and lots of family and friends flew from South Africa over to little ol’ Norfolk for a super fun and relaxed South African themed wedding day!

The owners (Nicole and her husband) behind this stunning, historic Norfolk wedding venue, were at hand with everything and accompanied by Nev and Christine’s amazing creative styling and the florist’s colourful flower garlands and arrangements, Bateman’s Barn became a vision of bold pinks, oranges and golds! There were so many unique and quirky little details that made the day so memorable and full of ambiance!

A Farm Wedding – Norfolk Wedding Photographer

A   S U F F O L K   F A R M   W E D D I N G

M A X  &  C L A I R E

This stunning D.I.Y. Farm Wedding is probably one of the most anticipated outdoor weddings of the year and sums up exactly why I am an outdoor wedding photographer! Claire is a mutual horsey friend and I’ve known her for a few years now through mutual friends and competitions. I think I did a little dance after we met in Toft Monks over a drink in the Summer of 2016 to chat about their wedding plans! Max and Claire’s plan was to have the most relaxed, party vibe of a wedding that they could possibly have – farm reception, horses, tipis, fairy lights, reggae band and lots and lots of fun loving people! I knew this Suffolk Farm Wedding was going to be a blast and despite the very long day, I ended having my camera taken off of me so I could (awkwardly) join in with the dancing (I can’t dance…) It was so lovely to see old friends and everyone genuinely having the BEST day!

If you are debating on whether to plan a outdoor/ farm/ tipi/ festival styled wedding I am 100% sure that the photos featured in this blog post from Max and Claire’s big day will somewhat persuade you! The best June Summer’s day with amazing people and two of the best matched people in the world. I don’t think I stopped smiling all day!

Claire and her girls got ready at the beautifully rustic Fritton House Hotel in Suffolk, the ceremony took place at one of the most open and lightest churches I have ever photographed at and the reception took place in Blundeston at Claire’s family’s farm! Lots of locations = lots of different photos! I hope I have captured the story of the day as it unravelled and that you can gain a tiny insight into just how much fun myself and everyone had that day! More weddings like this please! #farmwedding #galleywedding #suffolkwedding

When I got told to sit down by the vicar and to stop taking photos… There will be a blog post about rude vicars and how to handle them and how to emphasise to them just how important your wedding photos mean to you and your fiancé! It is your day and sometimes you have to lay down some ground rules! Obviously as a photographer I 100% respect their part to play in your day but I your wedding photos should not come second!
